About the Personal Creed Project
We’re transformed by discovering what we value
The Personal Creed journey comes in two phases:
1) Reflections
Your reflections help you identify the most impactful influences that have formed you — the circumstances, experiences, people, qualities and questions that shape your life. You then explore how these influences make you the person you are today.
Understanding more clearly what and who have shaped you, you’re ready to envision what you want your life to be about. You can choose values to guide you in upcoming years.
These values are your Personal Creed.
2) Presentation
You culminate your Creed experience with a presentation before a face-to-face or virtual community, a group of people you’ve invited to support you as you share:
- the main influences that shape me;
- the values I’ve chosen to live by (my personal creed);
- the qualities I’ll need to support me in staying true to my values;
- the difference I want my values to help me make in others’ lives or the world.
More about the Project’s Benefits
Identity and Purpose:
- Discovering and going public with our values gives us a new sense of who we are. A more grounded sense of identity, even purpose, comes from reflecting broadly on our own unique life experience.
Habits of Reflection:
- The Personal Creed process encourages lifelong habits of reflecting regularly on how best to live our values, and periodically updating them. Former students in their 20s, 30s and beyond often report this habit.
Heightened Capacity to Contribute to Others and Community:
- The experience prepares us for deeper relationships. Being present for another’s Personal Creed presentation, for instance, can leave us with a strong sense of connection to our presenter and others present, years after the event.
- Knowing what we stand for and why prepares us to play more confident, conscious, caring roles in our families, schools, workplaces, communities, and as citizens in our democracy. Feeling increasingly useful to others lifts self-esteem.
Deepened Capacity to Learn:
Having participated in this project, educators and students are primed to appreciate a fresh view of the nature of learning, particularly with respect to the role of self-discovery.
New Perspective on Education:
The Personal Creed experience enables learners and educators to see that academic and personal development matter equally and should balance one another in curriculum and instruction.
